My father, Dr. John T. Glick, Jr., passed away peacefully at his home in Broadway, Virginia, on September 5, 2007, at 7:15 a.m. at the age of 87.
Daddy was born in Bridgewater, Virginia, to the late John T. Glick, Sr., and Effie Iwilla (Evers) Glick. He was the third child of twelve. They lived in Timberville, Virginia, for a while and then on a farm near Centerville, Virginia. He is a graduate of North River High School in Augusta County.
He served his country during World War II in Civilian Public Service (CPS) as a conscientious objector. He was assigned to Alexian Brothers Hospital in Chicago, where he completed nursing chool. After he received his nursing degree, he decided to become a doctor. He went to Bridgewater College, where he met his future wife (my mom), Geraldine Zigler, and business partner and best friend, William ("Bill") J. Hotchkiss. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and then relocated to Broadway in 1951.
Daddy and Dr. Hotchkiss were family practice physicians in Broadway for 45 years, until their retirement in 1996. For many years they provided the only medical care in the area around Broadway. Before the rescue squad was formed, Daddy and Bill were called for every medical emergency in town, from automobile accidents to heart attacks to the delivery of babies...between the two of them they delivered over 1000 babies over the years. When they first started in medicine, there were no anesthesiologists at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Doctors were expected to administer their patients' anesthesia during surgery.
Daddy chaired the medical staff at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and helped to organize the hospital's first emergency room staffed by physicians. He also chaired the Valley section of the Virginia medical society and took his skills abroad to work with Somalian refugees in Camp Ali Maton as part of the National Council of Churches.
Daddy's life focused on his passions of people, the outdoors, working with his hands, music, and the church. Everyone who knew him felt his love of people, especially the children in his life. He loved fishing, birds and wildlife, and being around animals. He worked with his brothers on their Christmas Tree farm in Centerville. He enjoyed woodworking and taking care of his yard, his flowers, and his trees. He appreciated all types of music and participated in the Rockingham Male Chorus as well as his church choir. He spent many years square dancing with the Plains Promenaders. He served the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren as a Trustee for over 50 years.
He is survived by six siblings: G. Wayne Glick of Lancaster, PA, Elizabeth C. Glick-Reiman of Richmond, CA, Margaret V. (Glick) Hunkins of Talent, OR, Joseph L. Glick of Harrisonburg, VA, Ruth C. (Glick) Welliver of Lewisburg, and PA, Stanley G. Glick of Bridgewater, VA; his children, Judith Glick-Smith (me) of Cumming, GA, Michael Glick of Columbiana, OH, Margaret Davis of Fort Lee, VA, Joan Strawderman of Manassas, VA, and John Glick of New Market, VA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. In 1996, he lost his wife, Geraldine, and daughter, Amy Louise (Glick) Hill, both to cancer within a month of each other.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Linville Creek Church of the Brethren, 409 Brethren Road, Broadway, Virginia 22815, at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2007. The public is invited to attend.
